Gone are the days of the trusted reporter filing a report on a Motorola two-way receiver whilst riding a bicycle around the town.
The golden age of journalism was a place where there was space for everyone – the odd historic process along with the democraticisation of the news process has meant journalism has been shrinking.
Some forms of journalism have a positive impact on the British public. For example £100 million was raised for the Haiti disaster as people read, heard and saw the news.
That being said, journalists are no longer really fully trusted by the newsroom. Most have to deal with the perils of the news desk telling the journalists about the wonderful pictures they are viewing in the office regardless of what the journalist has seen on the ground. The hack is being fed by the newsroom but Haiti was different as there was no global village transmitting information.
Journalism has power when it can reduce huge events to the experience of one person. Likewise when viewing the report through the eyes of one person.
One of the other problems with journalism can be viewed through this example. We had a general election with no real campaign, the leaders weren’t cross examined by the media and members of the public were not given the opportunity to experience the campaign. The election did not go according to plan as Brown was not meant to have a leg to stand on, Clegg was not meant to exist and Cameron was meant to fly in like the new emperor.
As journalist’s we should be working out the story with the viewer/audience to find out what is happening together. We really need to be working out the way forward together to share the value of the information. Enhancing the human understanding of the world in which we live.
The journalism that is happening now is all about what is happening now – who is responsible for going back to events in a year’s time. There is a danger of becoming a now society with no perspective. Just look at the rise of Twitter becoming the most comprehensive news wires.

We need more iinsghts like this in this thread.
